I gotta admit, I purchased this can of Hockley Dark because it looked like a tasty English beer. The can was brown like Guinness and the cream logo also looks very English. So, I was shocked when I looked at the can to get information for the blog that I learned this tasty beer was from a brewery in Ontario Canada.
Hockley Valley Brewing Company won gold medals at the Ontario Brewer Awards in 2007 and 2008. After enjoying this traditional English ale, I'm not surprised. As soon as I swallowed some, I immediately tasted caramel and molasses. As my taste buds got used to these flavours, I noticed a bit of a coffee finish. Often, I only need one or two dark beers, but I could easily drink 5 or 6 of these bad boys.
The company describes Hockley Dark as an ingenius hybrid of a Northern Brown Ale and a Midlands Mild, with a body tweaked to give it a lighter, more North American appeal. That's exactly what I was thinking (yeah right).
So, if you ever come across Hockley Dark, I highly recommend it.
